The Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the de facto border between India and China, stretching approximately 4,057 kilometers across the Himalayas. Unlike the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan, which has some international recognition, or India's international borders with other neighbors that are clearly demarcated, the LAC represents an unresolved boundary dispute that has persisted since the 1962 Sino-Indian War.

The LAC is essentially where Indian and Chinese forces stopped advancing during the 1962 conflict and agreed to maintain their positions. This makes it fundamentally different from a legally recognized international boundary.

The LAC passes through some of the world's most challenging terrain, including high-altitude deserts, glaciers, and mountain passes, making both patrolling and demarcation extremely difficult. What makes the LAC particularly complex is that both India and China have different perceptions of where this line actually runs.

In many areas, there are overlapping claims, with both sides believing their version of the LAC is correct. This has led to numerous face-offs, standoffs, and occasional clashes between border forces.

The LAC is divided into three distinct sectors, each with its own characteristics and dispute patterns. The Western Sector covers Ladakh and includes areas like Aksai Chin, which China controls but India claims.

The Middle Sector runs through Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and is relatively peaceful with fewer disputes. The Eastern Sector covers Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, where China claims the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh as 'South Tibet.

' For UPSC aspirants, understanding the LAC is crucial because it connects multiple dimensions: international relations, national security, diplomacy, and current affairs. Questions on LAC frequently appear in both Prelims and Mains, often linked with India-China relations, border management, confidence-building measures, and recent developments like the Galwan Valley clash or Doklam standoff.

The LAC also demonstrates India's approach to managing unresolved territorial disputes through diplomatic engagement while maintaining military preparedness.
