Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) between India and China represent a sophisticated diplomatic and military framework designed to manage one of the world's most complex and sensitive border relationships.
At their core, CBMs are institutionalized mechanisms that help prevent misunderstandings, reduce tensions, and maintain peace along the 3,488-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC) that separates Indian and Chinese forces.
Think of CBMs as a comprehensive rulebook that both countries have agreed to follow when their military forces operate near the disputed border areas. These measures serve multiple critical functions in India-China relations.
First, they provide predictable protocols for military interactions, ensuring that routine patrol activities don't accidentally trigger larger conflicts. Second, they establish communication channels that allow both sides to clarify intentions and resolve disputes before they escalate.
Third, they create transparency mechanisms that help build mutual understanding about each other's military activities and strategic intentions. The India-China CBM framework encompasses several categories of measures.

The effectiveness of CBMs can be measured by their success in preventing major military confrontations for nearly six decades after the 1962 war, despite numerous face-offs and tensions. However, recent incidents like the 2017 Doklam standoff and the 2020 Galwan clash have tested the limits of existing CBMs and highlighted the need for their continuous evolution and strengthening.
