Trade and Economy — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims, mastering the trade and economy of the Indus Valley Civilization requires a strong focus on factual recall and the ability to connect specific archaeological finds to broader economic practices.
Begin by memorizing the key sites associated with economic activities: Lothal (port, bead-making, warehouse), Chanhudaro (bead-making workshops), Harappa and Mohenjodaro (granaries, administrative centers, craft production).
Understand the types of goods traded – both exports (agricultural surplus, carnelian beads, cotton textiles) and imports (copper, gold, lapis lazuli, tin). Crucially, internalize the concept of standardization: the cubical chert weights (binary and decimal system) and their significance.
Familiarize yourself with the Harappan seals – their material (steatite), common motifs (unicorn, bull), and their presumed role in trade authentication. Remember the major trade partners, especially Mesopotamia (Meluhha), and the primary routes (maritime via Persian Gulf).
Practice identifying correct statements from incorrect ones, particularly those that might misrepresent trade routes or the primary materials of artifacts. Vyyuha recommends creating flashcards for each site, listing its key economic contributions and associated finds.
Pay attention to recent archaeological discoveries, as they are increasingly becoming a source of Prelims questions.
