Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on 'Important Compounds of Carbon and Silicon', a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the basics: clearly understand the electronic configuration and general properties of carbon and silicon that dictate their compound formation.

For each important compound (CO, CO2, SiO2, silicones, silicates, zeolites, carbides), focus on its preparation methods (both laboratory and industrial), key physical and chemical properties, structural aspects (hybridization, bond angles, network structures), and diverse applications/uses.

Pay special attention to unique properties like CO's toxicity, CO2's greenhouse effect, SiO2's inertness, silicone's water repellency, and zeolite's molecular sieving. For silicates, memorize the classification based on the sharing of SiO44SiO_4^{4-} tetrahedra.

Practice identifying the correct structure or property from a list of options. For numerical problems (though rare), ensure you can apply stoichiometry if a reaction-based calculation is given. Always read the question carefully, especially looking for keywords like 'incorrect' or 'not characteristic', to avoid common traps.

Eliminate obviously wrong options first. A strong emphasis on factual recall combined with a conceptual understanding of why these properties exist will be key to scoring well.
