Child protection mechanisms in India refer to the comprehensive framework of laws, policies, institutions, and programs designed to safeguard children from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence, and to ensure their healthy development and well-being.

This multi-layered system aims to uphold the rights of every child, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution and international conventions like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). At its core, child protection moves beyond mere welfare to a rights-based approach, recognizing children as rights-holders rather than passive recipients of charity.

It encompasses preventive measures, such as awareness campaigns and support for vulnerable families, as well as responsive actions, including rescue, rehabilitation, and legal redressal for children who have experienced harm.

The system addresses diverse issues ranging from child labour, trafficking, sexual abuse, and neglect, to ensuring proper care for children in need of care and protection (CNCP) and children in conflict with law (CICL).

Key legislative pillars include the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which provides for a child-friendly approach to juvenile justice and adoption, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, specifically designed to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.

Institutional mechanisms like Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs), and District Child Protection Units (DCPUs) form the operational backbone, working in coordination with law enforcement, civil society organizations, and communities.
