Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, literally meaning 'Overseas Indian Day,' is India's flagship annual celebration dedicated to the Indian diaspora worldwide. Observed on January 9 since 2003, this day holds special significance as it marks Mahatma Gandhi's return from South Africa in 1915, symbolizing the homecoming of an overseas Indian who would later lead India's independence movement.
The celebration represents India's recognition of its vast diaspora community, estimated at over 32 million people spread across more than 200 countries and territories. The event serves multiple purposes: honoring the achievements of overseas Indians, facilitating their engagement with India's development, and strengthening cultural and economic ties between India and its diaspora.
