Prelims Strategy

To excel in Lorentz force questions for NEET, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, thoroughly understand the vector nature of the force: FL=q(E+v×B)\vec{F}_L = q(\vec{E} + \vec{v} \times \vec{B}). Master the right-hand rule (or Fleming's left-hand rule for current) for determining the direction of the magnetic force; this is a common conceptual trap.

For numerical problems, always identify the given quantities, including the charge's sign, velocity vector, and magnetic/electric field vectors. Pay close attention to the angle θ\theta between v\vec{v} and B\vec{B} when calculating the magnitude qvBsinθqvB\sin\theta.

Remember that the magnetic force does no work, so kinetic energy and speed remain constant in a purely magnetic field. For problems involving circular motion, memorize and understand the derivation of r=mvqBr = \frac{mv}{qB} and T=2πmqBT = \frac{2\pi m}{qB}.

In combined E and B fields (velocity selector), the key is to equate the magnitudes of electric and magnetic forces (qE=qvBqE = qvB) for undeflected motion. Practice a variety of problems, including those with vector notation, to become comfortable with cross product calculations and unit vector manipulations.

Always double-check units and powers of ten in calculations.
