Definition

Imagine pouring honey versus pouring water. Honey flows much slower and feels 'thicker' than water. This 'thickness' or resistance to flow is what we call viscosity. In simpler terms, viscosity is a measure of a fluid's internal friction.

Think of a fluid as being made up of many thin layers, like a deck of cards. When you push the top card, the cards below it also move, but with decreasing speed. There's friction between each card layer, resisting their relative motion.

Similarly, in a flowing fluid, layers of molecules slide past each other. If one layer tries to move faster than an adjacent layer, there's an internal 'drag' or frictional force that opposes this relative motion.

This force is what viscosity quantifies.

Fluids that flow easily, like water or alcohol, have low viscosity. Fluids that resist flow, like honey, motor oil, or molasses, have high viscosity. This resistance comes from the cohesive forces between molecules within the fluid and the momentum exchange between them.

For liquids, strong intermolecular forces (like hydrogen bonding in water or van der Waals forces in oils) make it harder for layers to slide past each other, leading to higher viscosity. For gases, viscosity primarily arises from the collision and momentum transfer between molecules.

The faster molecules from a faster-moving layer collide with slower molecules from an adjacent layer, transferring momentum and effectively 'dragging' the slower layer along, while the slower molecules 'resist' the faster ones.

Viscosity is a fundamental property that dictates how fluids behave under stress. It's why lubricants work (they reduce friction between solid surfaces by providing a viscous layer), why paint spreads (its viscosity determines its flow characteristics), and why blood flows through our veins (its viscosity affects blood pressure and flow rate). Understanding viscosity is key to many real-world applications and is a core concept in fluid mechanics.
