Imagine dropping an apple. It falls to the ground, right? What pulls it down? That's gravity. But gravity isn't just about things falling to Earth. It's a universal force, meaning it acts everywhere in the cosmos. Sir Isaac Newton famously formulated the Law of Universal Gravitation, which is the cornerstone of understanding this phenomenon.

At its simplest, Newton's law states that every object in the universe attracts every other object. The strength of this attraction depends on two main factors: the masses of the objects and the distance between them.

The more massive the objects, the stronger the gravitational pull between them. Think of it like this: a tiny pebble and the Earth attract each other, but the Earth's mass is so much greater that its pull on the pebble is overwhelmingly dominant, making the pebble fall towards it.

Conversely, the pebble also pulls on the Earth, but the Earth's immense inertia means this pull has a negligible effect on its motion.

Secondly, the distance between the objects plays a crucial role. The gravitational force decreases rapidly as the distance between the objects increases. Specifically, it follows an inverse square law, meaning if you double the distance, the force becomes one-fourth of its original strength. This is why the Sun's gravity keeps Earth in orbit, but its pull on distant planets like Neptune is much weaker.

This gravitational force is what keeps us rooted to the ground, makes planets orbit stars, and stars orbit the centers of galaxies. It's the architect of large-scale cosmic structures. While it's the weakest of the four fundamental forces, its long-range nature and cumulative effect over vast masses make it the dominant force shaping the universe on astronomical scales.

Understanding gravitation is key to comprehending everything from satellite motion to the formation of black holes. For NEET aspirants, mastering the concepts of gravitational force, acceleration due to gravity, gravitational potential, and orbital mechanics is absolutely essential, as these form the basis for numerous problem-solving scenarios.
