Surendranath Banerjee, often hailed as the 'Father of Indian Nationalism' in its early, moderate phase, was a towering figure whose life and career profoundly shaped the trajectory of India's freedom struggle.
Born in 1848 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, into a distinguished Kulin Brahmin family, Banerjee's journey began with a strong emphasis on Western education, a common path for the aspiring Indian elite of his time.
He was among the earliest Indians to successfully clear the highly competitive Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination in 1869, a remarkable feat that symbolized the intellectual prowess of Indians and challenged the colonial narrative of their supposed inferiority.
This achievement, however, was short-lived. In 1874, he was controversially dismissed from the ICS on grounds of a minor technicality, a decision widely perceived as racially motivated and an act of injustice by the British administration.
This personal affront, rather than deterring him, ignited his political consciousness and transformed him into a fervent nationalist.
Banerjee's dismissal proved to be a pivotal moment, not just for him personally, but for the nascent Indian nationalist movement. It exposed the racial bias inherent in the colonial administration and fueled his resolve to fight for greater Indian representation and justice.

His leadership reached its zenith during the Partition of Bengal 1905 agitation, where he emerged as one of the most articulate and influential voices against Lord Curzon's divisive policy. He tirelessly toured Bengal, organizing massive public meetings and inspiring widespread resistance, earning him the moniker "Surrender Not" Banerjee.
Despite his moderate leanings, he supported the Swadeshi movement as a legitimate form of economic protest, though he cautioned against its more radical interpretations.
Banerjee's career was also marked by his journalistic endeavors. He edited 'The Bengalee' newspaper for many years, using it as a powerful platform to articulate nationalist views, criticize colonial policies, and educate the public.
