Functions of Attitudes — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For Prelims preparation on attitude functions, focus on memorizing the four primary functions with clear definitional boundaries and distinguishing characteristics. Create mental associations: Knowledge = Information Processing, Instrumental = Goal Achievement, Value-Expressive = Identity Communication, Ego-Defensive = Self-Protection.
Practice identifying functions through behavioral cues - instrumental attitudes change with incentives, value-expressive attitudes resist change for identity reasons, ego-defensive attitudes externalize blame, knowledge attitudes create cognitive shortcuts.
Memorize Katz's original formulation (1960) and key researchers. Focus on elimination techniques: if question mentions goal achievement or rewards, likely instrumental; if mentions identity or values, likely value-expressive; if mentions self-protection or blame, likely ego-defensive; if mentions information organization, likely knowledge function.
Pay attention to qualifying phrases like 'despite evidence' (suggests ego-defensive), 'based on past experience' (suggests knowledge), 'reflects personal values' (suggests value-expressive), 'helps achieve objectives' (suggests instrumental).
Practice with scenarios involving civil servants, policy implementation, and organizational change as these are UPSC's preferred contexts for testing attitude functions.
