Solid Waste Management (SWM) refers to the systematic process of handling solid waste from its point of generation to its final disposal. It encompasses a range of activities including collection, transportation, treatment, recycling, and disposal of waste materials.

The primary objective of SWM is to minimize the adverse impacts of waste on human health, the environment, and aesthetics, while also recovering resources where possible. In essence, it's about transforming a societal byproduct into a manageable resource or safely containing it to prevent harm.

This hierarchy promotes a circular economy approach, aiming to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.
