Transportation infrastructure in India encompasses the physical and digital systems that enable the movement of people and goods across the country. This includes roads (national highways, state highways, rural roads), railways (passenger and freight networks), ports (major and non-major), airports (international and domestic), and supporting digital infrastructure like Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).

India's transportation network spans over 6.4 million km of roads, 68,000 km of railway lines, 12 major ports, 200+ non-major ports, and 487 airports. The sector is crucial for economic growth as it connects markets, reduces logistics costs, and enables trade.

Currently, India's logistics cost is 13-14% of GDP compared to 8-10% in developed countries, highlighting the need for infrastructure improvement. The government has launched several flagship programs like Bharatmala (road connectivity), Sagarmala (port-led development), Dedicated Freight Corridors (railway efficiency), and UDAN (regional air connectivity) to address infrastructure gaps.

Transportation infrastructure directly impacts industrial competitiveness, agricultural market access, employment generation, and regional development. Poor connectivity increases transportation costs, reduces farmer incomes, limits industrial growth, and creates regional imbalances.

Modern transportation infrastructure incorporates digital technologies like GPS tracking, electronic toll collection, automated cargo handling, and integrated logistics platforms. The sector faces challenges including inadequate capacity, poor last-mile connectivity, modal imbalances (over-dependence on roads), financing constraints, land acquisition issues, and environmental concerns.
