Discovery of New Gandhara Stupa and Monastery Complex in Swat Valley
March 2024Archaeologists working in Pakistan's Swat Valley (ancient Uddiyana) have unearthed a previously unknown large stupa and monastic complex, dating back to the 2nd-3rd century CE. The site has yielded several intact stucco Buddha and Bodhisattva heads, along with narrative panels depicting Jataka tales, offering fresh insights into the artistic evolution and geographical spread of the Gandhara School. This discovery reinforces the Swat Valley's importance as a major center for Buddhist art and provides new material for studying the transition from schist to stucco in Gandhara sculpture. For UPSC, such discoveries underscore the ongoing relevance of archaeological research and the continuous unfolding of India's ancient cultural narrative.
