Indus Valley Architecture refers to the distinctive building and urban planning practices of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC), also known as the Harappan Civilization, which flourished in the northwestern regions of South Asia from around 2600 to 1900 BCE.

This civilization is globally recognized for its pioneering urbanism, making it one of the world's earliest and most advanced planned societies. Unlike many contemporary civilizations that focused on monumental religious structures or royal palaces, the Harappans prioritized civic infrastructure and public amenities, reflecting a unique societal organization.

Houses were equipped with private bathrooms and toilets, with drains connecting to larger street drains, which were often covered with brick slabs or stone. These street drains, in turn, led to larger municipal drains or soak pits.

The Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro stands as an iconic example of their water management capabilities, featuring sophisticated waterproofing techniques using natural bitumen and gypsum plaster. Dholavira further showcases ingenious water harvesting systems, with a series of interconnected reservoirs designed to capture and store monsoon rainwater.

Public buildings included large granaries, interpreted as state storehouses for grain, and assembly halls. Residential architecture was remarkably uniform, characterized by multi-roomed houses built around a central courtyard, providing privacy and ventilation.

Wells were common, often located within individual houses or public spaces, ensuring access to fresh water. The absence of overtly grand temples or palaces, unlike Mesopotamian or Egyptian civilizations, suggests a different socio-political structure, perhaps one where civic amenities and collective well-being were paramount.
