Prelims Strategy

For CSAT Prelims, approaching resource allocation questions requires a systematic, step-by-step methodology combined with quick checks. First, read the scenario carefully to identify the core problem, the objective (what needs to be maximized or minimized), and all explicit and implicit constraints (budget, time, manpower, specific ratios, minimum requirements).

Second, translate the problem into a simplified model. For LP-style questions, identify decision variables (e.g., number of units of X, Y), write down the objective function, and list all constraints as inequalities.

Third, use the options to your advantage. Instead of solving complex equations, test each given option against all constraints. Eliminate options that violate any constraint immediately. For the feasible options, calculate the objective function value and choose the one that optimizes it (highest for maximization, lowest for minimization).

Fourth, look for heuristics and shortcuts. Often, questions are designed so that one resource is a 'bottleneck'. Identifying this can quickly narrow down options. For CBA-style questions, calculate simple benefit-cost ratios.

For MCDA, apply the given weights and scores. Finally, practice time management. These questions can be time-consuming if you try to solve them exhaustively. Develop the ability to quickly set up the problem and efficiently test options.

Remember, the goal is not mathematical perfection but administrative rationality. This strategy integrates with Quantitative Aptitude Fundamentals.
