Estimation techniques are smart mathematical shortcuts that help you find approximate answers quickly without doing lengthy calculations. Think of them as your mathematical GPS - they get you to the right neighborhood even if not the exact address.
In CSAT, where time is your biggest enemy, these techniques can be your best friend. Imagine you need to calculate 47% of 892. Instead of multiplying 0.47 × 892 exactly, estimation lets you think: 'roughly 50% of 900 = 450.
' This saves precious minutes while keeping you accurate enough to pick the right answer. The beauty of estimation lies in recognizing that CSAT answer choices are usually spread apart enough that a good approximation will clearly point to the correct option.
These techniques work because human brains are naturally good at pattern recognition and relative comparisons. When you see 23.7% of 1,847, your estimation-trained mind immediately thinks '25% of 1,800 ≈ 450' rather than getting bogged down in decimal multiplication.
The key insight is that CSAT tests your logical thinking and decision-making speed, not your ability to be a human calculator.
