Time Speed Distance — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
Master TSD through systematic formula memorization and pattern recognition. Focus on the five core problem types: basic TSD (15% weightage), trains (35%), boats and streams (20%), relative speed (25%), and circular motion (5%).
Prioritize train problems as they offer highest return on investment. Memorize key conversions: km/h to m/s (multiply by 5/18), m/s to km/h (multiply by 18/5). Practice unit identification early in each problem to avoid calculation errors.
Develop quick recognition skills: look for keywords like 'crossing', 'overtaking', 'upstream/downstream', 'opposite directions' to identify problem types instantly. Use elimination techniques: check if answer choices are in correct units, eliminate obviously wrong magnitudes, use approximation when choices are widely spaced.
Create a formula sheet with: basic TSD, relative speed rules, train crossing formulas, boats and streams relationships, and average speed calculations. Practice mental math for common calculations: 5/18 and 18/5 multiplications, simple fraction operations, percentage-to-decimal conversions.
Time management is crucial: allocate 2-3 minutes per TSD question, with basic problems taking 90 seconds and complex train/boat problems taking up to 3 minutes. If stuck beyond 3 minutes, guess intelligently and move on.
Common traps include: confusing arithmetic mean with average speed, forgetting to add train lengths in crossing problems, using wrong relative speed direction, and unit conversion errors. Practice with previous year questions to understand UPSC's specific phrasing and trap patterns.
