Letter Patterns — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
For UPSC CSAT Prelims, the strategy for letter patterns must be precision-focused and time-efficient. Vyyuha recommends starting every problem by immediately converting letters to their positional values (A=1, B=2...
Z=26) . This numerical conversion simplifies pattern identification. Next, calculate the differences between consecutive terms. Look for a constant difference, an increasing/decreasing difference (variable skip), or an alternating pattern.
If the direct sequence seems erratic, immediately check for alternating patterns by analyzing odd-positioned terms separately from even-positioned terms. Always be mindful of 'wrap-around' logic (Z to A).
Practice with a timer to develop speed and accuracy. Use elimination heuristics: once you identify a plausible pattern, quickly check if it holds for the entire given series before applying it to find the missing term.
Avoid getting stuck on a single question; if a pattern isn't immediately obvious after 60-75 seconds, mark it and move on, returning if time permits. This systematic approach, coupled with rigorous practice, is key to scoring maximum marks in this section.
