The main idea is the central point or primary message that the author wants to communicate to readers. It's the most important information in the passage - what the entire text revolves around. Think of it as the backbone of the passage that holds everything together.
When you can identify the main idea, you understand what the author considers most significant and what they want you to remember after reading. The theme, while related, is slightly different. Theme refers to the underlying subject matter, topic, or recurring concept that runs throughout the passage.
It's broader than the main idea and represents the general area or field the passage discusses. For example, if a passage discusses various environmental protection measures implemented by the government, the theme would be 'environmental conservation' while the main idea might be 'government initiatives are crucial for effective environmental protection.
' In CSAT passages, you'll encounter both explicit and implicit main ideas. Explicit main ideas are directly stated in the passage, often in topic sentences at the beginning or end of paragraphs. These are easier to identify because the author clearly tells you what they consider most important.
