Prelims Strategy

Develop systematic vocabulary analysis through the Context Pyramid Method rather than memorizing word lists. Focus on identifying and utilizing five context clue types: definition (highest reliability), synonym/antonym (good frequency), example (moderate reliability), inference (highest complexity), and functional clues.

Practice with actual CSAT passages daily, spending 45-60 seconds per vocabulary question using structured timing: 15 seconds for context identification, 25 seconds for systematic analysis, 15 seconds for option evaluation and verification.

Memorize common signal words for each clue type - 'means,' 'refers to' for definitions; 'however,' 'unlike' for contrasts; 'similarly,' 'likewise' for synonyms. Build familiarity with UPSC's preferred vocabulary domains: administrative terminology (efficacious, ameliorate, mitigate), economic jargon (depreciation, volatility, sustainability), scientific terms (biodegradation, synthesis, optimization), and literary vocabulary (perspicacious, ubiquitous, paradigmatic).

Use elimination strategy aggressively - remove options that clearly don't fit grammatically or semantically before detailed analysis. Practice rapid context scanning techniques to identify obvious clues quickly, reserving detailed analysis for complex inference questions.

Never skip vocabulary questions due to no negative marking - even random guessing yields 25% accuracy, while systematic context analysis achieves 75-85% accuracy rates.
