To excel in NEET questions on Natural and Synthetic Polymers, a systematic approach focused on memorization and conceptual clarity is crucial.
- Master the Definitions: — Clearly understand what monomers, polymers, natural polymers, and synthetic polymers are.
- Categorize Examples: — Create a comprehensive list of natural polymers (e.g., proteins, starch, cellulose, natural rubber, DNA, RNA) and synthetic polymers (e.g., polyethylene, PVC, nylon, polyester, Bakelite, Buna-S, neoprene). For each, identify its monomer(s) and the type of polymerization (addition or condensation).
- Focus on Monomer-Polymer Pairs: — This is the most frequently tested aspect. Use flashcards or tables to link each polymer to its specific monomer(s). For copolymers, remember both monomers (e.g., Nylon-6,6 from hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid; Buna-S from 1,3-butadiene and styrene).
- Learn Key Applications: — Associate each important polymer with its primary uses. For instance, polyethylene for packaging, PVC for pipes, Nylon for fibers, Bakelite for electrical switches, Buna-S for tires.
- Understand Basic Properties: — Know general properties like biodegradability (natural often are, synthetic often aren't), elasticity (rubbers), strength (fibers), and thermosetting/thermoplastic nature.
- Beware of Trap Options: — Questions often include monomers of synthetic rubbers when asking for natural rubber, or vice-versa. Pay close attention to the exact name and structure. Also, be wary of absolute statements like 'always' or 'never' regarding properties, as there are often exceptions.
