Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on the physical and chemical properties of ethers, a structured approach is essential. For conceptual questions on physical properties, always start by identifying the functional group and then the dominant intermolecular forces.

Remember the hierarchy: Hydrogen bonding (alcohols) > Dipole-dipole (ethers, aldehydes/ketones) > London dispersion (alkanes). For solubility, consider the ability to form hydrogen bonds with water. For reaction-based questions, especially ether cleavage with HI/HBr, it's critical to determine the mechanism (SN1 or SN2).

If a tertiary, benzylic, or allylic group is present, favor SN1, where the halide attacks the carbon forming the most stable carbocation. If both groups are primary/secondary, or one is methyl, favor SN2, where the halide attacks the less sterically hindered carbon.

For aromatic ethers, remember the strong resonance effect of the -OR group, making it activating and ortho-para directing for electrophilic substitution, and strengthening the aryl-oxygen bond against cleavage.

Always read the question carefully to identify if it's asking for initial products or final products after complete reaction. Pay attention to trap options that might confuse SN1/SN2 mechanisms or the directing effects of substituents.

Practice drawing mechanisms for key reactions to solidify your understanding.
