Global Warming and Greenhouse Effect — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on Global Warming and Greenhouse Effect, a multi-faceted strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions: clearly differentiate between the natural and enhanced greenhouse effect, and global warming.
Secondly, memorize the key greenhouse gases (CO, CH, NO, HFCs, SF, HO vapor) and their primary anthropogenic sources. Create a mental map or a table for this. For instance, CO from fossil fuels and deforestation; CH from livestock, landfills, rice paddies; NO from nitrogen fertilizers.
Thirdly, understand the concept of Global Warming Potential (GWP) and the relative order of potency of different GHGs (e.g., F-gases > NO > CH > CO). You don't need to recall exact GWP numbers, but their relative magnitudes are important.
Fourthly, be clear on the consequences of global warming (sea-level rise, extreme weather, ocean acidification). Finally, and critically, distinguish global warming from other environmental issues like ozone layer depletion and acid rain.
Questions often try to trap students by mixing up the causes or effects of these distinct phenomena. For numerical problems, focus on conceptual understanding rather than complex calculations, as NEET typically tests relative values or direct application of simple formulas.
Practice identifying the correct statement among distractors that often contain subtle inaccuracies.
