Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on the physical and chemical properties of alkanes, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. For physical properties, focus on understanding the trends. Remember that boiling point, melting point, and density generally increase with increasing carbon chain length due to stronger van der Waals forces.

Crucially, internalize the effect of branching: branching *decreases* boiling point (due to reduced surface area) but can sometimes *increase* melting point for highly symmetrical molecules (due to efficient packing).

Practice ranking isomers based on their boiling points. For solubility, simply remember 'like dissolves like' – alkanes are non-polar, so they are insoluble in polar solvents like water but soluble in non-polar organic solvents.

For chemical properties, the key is to associate specific reactions with their characteristic reagents, conditions, and mechanisms. For combustion, know the products of complete (CO2CO_2, H2OH_2O) and incomplete (COCO, CC, H2OH_2O) combustion.

For halogenation, remember it's a free radical substitution requiring UV light or heat. The most important aspect here is selectivity: tertiary H > secondary H > primary H. Practice identifying different types of hydrogens and predicting the major product based on this reactivity order.

For pyrolysis (cracking), understand that it breaks larger alkanes into smaller alkanes and alkenes at high temperatures, and its industrial significance. For isomerisation, remember the catalyst (AlCl3/HClAlCl_3/HCl) and its role in converting straight-chain to branched-chain alkanes.

Finally, for aromatization, know that C6C_6 and higher alkanes form aromatic compounds like benzene under specific catalytic conditions. Avoid rote memorization; instead, try to understand the underlying principles (e.

g., why free radicals are formed, why branching affects boiling point). Pay close attention to the wording of questions, especially distinguishing between 'major product' and 'possible product'.
