Homologous Series — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on homologous series, a systematic approach is essential. First, thoroughly memorize the defining characteristics: same functional group, general formula, CH2-\text{CH}_2- difference (and 14,u14,\text{u} mass difference), similar chemical properties, and gradual change in physical properties.

Second, commit to memory the general formulas for common homologous series like alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and amines. Practice deriving these formulas if you forget them.

For numerical problems involving molecular mass, remember that each CH2-\text{CH}_2- unit adds 14,u14,\text{u}.

When faced with identification questions (e.g., 'Which pair are homologues?'), always check both criteria: same functional group AND the CH2-\text{CH}_2- difference. Be wary of trap options that include isomers (especially functional isomers) or compounds from different classes that might have similar carbon counts but different functional groups.

For questions on physical properties, remember the general trend: boiling point and melting point increase with increasing molecular mass due to stronger intermolecular forces. Solubility in water generally decreases with increasing nonpolar chain length.

Always consider the presence or absence of hydrogen bonding when comparing compounds of similar molecular mass but different functional groups (e.g., alcohol vs. ether). Practice a variety of MCQs to get accustomed to the different ways this concept is tested.
