Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on alkaline earth metals' properties and reactivity, a systematic approach is essential. First, thoroughly understand the fundamental electronic configuration (ns2ns^2) and its implications for ion formation (M2+M^{2+}) and reducing nature.

Second, memorize and, more importantly, *understand the reasons* behind all periodic trends down the group: atomic/ionic radii (increase), ionization enthalpy (decrease), electronegativity (decrease), metallic character (increase), hydration enthalpy (decrease).

Third, pay special attention to the solubility trends of hydroxides (increases) and sulfates (decreases), and their underlying reasons (relative changes in lattice and hydration energies). Fourth, master the anomalous behavior of Beryllium (covalent compounds, amphoteric nature, no flame test) and its diagonal relationship with Aluminium.

Fifth, learn the specific reactions with oxygen (oxides, peroxides, nitrides), water (hydroxides, hydrogen), halogens (halides), and acids (salts, hydrogen), noting any exceptions or varying reactivities.

For MCQs, carefully read the question to identify what is being asked (e.g., 'correct' vs. 'incorrect' statement). Eliminate obviously wrong options. For trend-based questions, visualize the periodic table and recall the direction of the trend.

Practice with previous year's questions to identify common traps and frequently tested concepts.
