Prelims Strategy

For NEET Prelims, questions on Lewis structures are typically multiple-choice and can range from easy to medium difficulty. The key to success lies in a systematic approach and thorough understanding of the underlying principles.

    1
  1. Master the Step-by-Step Procedure:Always follow the standard steps: count total valence electrons (adjust for charge), identify the central atom, form single bonds, distribute lone pairs to terminal atoms, then to the central atom, and finally form multiple bonds if the central atom lacks an octet. Practice this sequence rigorously.
  2. 2
  3. Accurate Valence Electron Count:This is the most common initial error. Double-check the group number for each atom and remember to add/subtract electrons for negative/positive charges in ions. A simple mistake here will lead to an entirely incorrect structure.
  4. 3
  5. Formal Charge Calculation:Practice calculating formal charges for each atom. Remember the formula FC=VN12BFC = V - N - \frac{1}{2}B. This is crucial for selecting the most stable Lewis structure among resonance forms (minimize charges, negative on more electronegative atoms).
  6. 4
  7. Octet Rule Exceptions:Be very familiar with incomplete octets (e.g., BF3BF_3), expanded octets (e.g., PCl5PCl_5, SF6SF_6, XeF4XeF_4), and odd-electron molecules (e.g., NONO, NO2NO_2). These are frequent traps. Recognize that expanded octets are only possible for elements in Period 3 and beyond.
  8. 5
  9. Resonance Structures:Understand when resonance occurs (delocalization of multiple bonds and lone pairs) and how to draw all contributing structures. Remember the actual molecule is a hybrid, not oscillating between forms.
  10. 6
  11. Practice Common Molecules:Focus on drawing Lewis structures for frequently tested molecules and ions like CO2CO_2, SO2SO_2, NO3NO_3^-, CO32CO_3^{2-}, PO43PO_4^{3-}, ClO4ClO_4^-, SF4SF_4, XeF2XeF_2, XeF4XeF_4, I3I_3^-, etc.
  12. 7
  13. Time Management:While drawing Lewis structures can be time-consuming initially, with practice, you should be able to quickly sketch them or mentally visualize them for simpler molecules. For complex ones, a quick sketch is often faster than trying to guess.
  14. 8
  15. Connect to VSEPR:Always remember that a correct Lewis structure is the foundation for VSEPR theory. If a question asks about geometry or hybridization, the first step is always the Lewis structure.
