Definition

Lamarckism, named after the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, was one of the earliest comprehensive theories attempting to explain how life on Earth changes over time, a process we now call evolution.

Proposed in the early 19th century, specifically in his 1809 work 'Philosophie Zoologique', Lamarck's theory was revolutionary for its time because it suggested that species are not fixed but can transform.

At its heart, Lamarckism rests on two fundamental ideas. The first is the 'Principle of Use and Disuse'. This principle suggests that if an organ or body part is used more frequently by an organism, it will develop and become stronger or larger.

Conversely, if an organ is not used, it will gradually weaken, shrink, and eventually disappear over generations. Think of a blacksmith's arm muscles growing stronger with constant use, or the eyes of animals living in perpetual darkness becoming vestigial.

The second, and perhaps more controversial, principle is the 'Inheritance of Acquired Characters'. This states that the modifications or traits an organism gains during its lifetime due to use and disuse, or environmental influences, are not lost but are passed on to its offspring.

So, if a giraffe stretches its neck to reach higher leaves, Lamarck believed its neck would slightly lengthen, and this slightly longer neck would then be inherited by its progeny, leading to progressively longer necks over many generations.

Similarly, if an animal loses a limb in an accident, Lamarck's theory would imply that its offspring might be born with a reduced or missing limb, which we know is not true. While Lamarck's theory provided a coherent framework for evolutionary change and emphasized the role of adaptation to the environment, it lacked a robust mechanism for how these acquired traits could be inherited.

Modern genetics, particularly the understanding of DNA and germ cells, has shown that changes to somatic (body) cells during an organism's life are generally not passed on to the germline (sperm and egg cells) and therefore cannot be inherited.

Despite its eventual rejection, Lamarckism was a crucial stepping stone in the development of evolutionary thought, paving the way for later, more accurate theories like Darwinism.
