Non-infectious Diseases — Prelims Strategy
Prelims Strategy
To effectively tackle NEET questions on non-infectious diseases, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions and classifications: clearly distinguish between infectious and non-infectious diseases, and understand the sub-categories of NCDs (genetic, lifestyle, environmental, deficiency, autoimmune, cancer). Secondly, for each major NCD (Cancer, Diabetes, Allergies/Asthma, Autoimmune disorders, Deficiency diseases), focus on key aspects:
- Causes/Etiology: — Differentiate between genetic predisposition, lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, smoking), and environmental triggers. For cancer, know common carcinogens (physical, chemical, biological). For diabetes, understand insulin deficiency vs. resistance.
- Mechanism/Pathophysiology: — Briefly understand the underlying biological processes, e.g., autoimmune destruction of beta cells in Type 1 diabetes, histamine release in allergies, uncontrolled cell division in cancer.
- Key Symptoms: — Be able to recognize characteristic symptoms for each disease (e.g., polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia for diabetes; wheezing for asthma; bleeding gums for scurvy).
- Prevention and Management Principles: — General approaches like lifestyle modification, early screening, specific treatments (e.g., insulin for Type 1 diabetes, antihistamines for allergies, chemotherapy for cancer).
For MCQs, pay close attention to keywords like 'INCORRECT,' 'NOT,' or 'EXCEPT.' Eliminate options systematically. If a question describes symptoms, try to match them to the most appropriate disease based on your knowledge. Practice questions that require comparing and contrasting different NCDs or their types (e.g., Type 1 vs. Type 2 diabetes).
