Absorption of Carbohydrates — Prelims Strategy

NEET UG
Version 1Updated 22 Mar 2026

Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on carbohydrate absorption, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, memorize the key transporters: SGLT1, GLUT2, and GLUT5. Know which monosaccharides each transports and, critically, their exact location (apical/brush border membrane vs.

basolateral membrane of the enterocyte). Secondly, understand the transport mechanisms: clearly differentiate between secondary active transport (SGLT1 for glucose/galactose) and facilitated diffusion (GLUT5 for fructose, GLUT2 for all monosaccharides).

Pay attention to the energy requirements – SGLT1 is indirectly ATP-dependent due to the Na+/K+ ATPase, while GLUT5 and GLUT2 are not. Thirdly, focus on the role of sodium ions: understand that the Na+ gradient is indispensable for SGLT1 activity.

For conceptual questions, visualize the entire process from lumen to blood. When encountering 'incorrect' statements, meticulously check each option against your knowledge of transporters, mechanisms, and locations.

For numerical problems (though rare here), ensure units are consistent. Practice identifying common misconceptions, such as assuming all sugars use active transport or confusing apical with basolateral transporters.

Drawing flowcharts during revision can solidify these complex pathways.
