Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on 'Digestion in Mouth', a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, master the anatomy: clearly understand the roles of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, molars) in mastication, the tongue in manipulation and bolus formation, and the three major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual) in saliva production.

Secondly, focus on salivary composition and functions: memorize the key components of saliva (water, mucin, electrolytes, lysozyme, immunoglobulins, enzymes) and their specific roles (lubrication, antibacterial, taste, buffering).

Thirdly, deep dive into enzymes: know the names (salivary amylase, lingual lipase), their substrates (starch, triglycerides), their products (maltose, dextrins; fatty acids), and critically, their optimal pH and site of primary action.

Remember lingual lipase is secreted in the mouth but active in the stomach. For conceptual questions, visualize the process: food enters, chewed, mixed with saliva, starch starts breaking down, bolus forms, swallowed.

Pay attention to trap options that might confuse the site of secretion with the site of action, or misattribute enzyme functions. Practice MCQs that test these specific details to solidify your understanding and identify common misconceptions.
