Testis and Ovary — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To effectively tackle NEET questions on Testis and Ovary, a multi-pronged strategy is recommended. Firstly, master the anatomy and cell types: clearly differentiate between Leydig cells and Sertoli cells in the testis, and granulosa cells, theca cells, and the corpus luteum in the ovary.

Understand what each cell type produces. Secondly, memorize the hormones and their specific functions: create flashcards or tables for testosterone, estrogen (especially estradiol), progesterone, inhibin, and relaxin, detailing their target organs and physiological effects.

Pay close attention to the distinct roles of estrogen (proliferative phase, secondary characteristics) and progesterone (secretory phase, pregnancy maintenance). Thirdly, understand the HPG axis thoroughly: visualize the feedback loops involving GnRH, LH, and FSH.

Know which hormone stimulates which cell type and how the gonadal hormones provide negative (and sometimes positive, like estrogen for LH surge) feedback. For numerical problems (though rare in this specific topic, but possible in related endocrine disorders), ensure you understand the concept of hormone levels and their implications.

Finally, practice conceptual questions: many questions test your understanding of the 'why' and 'how' rather than just 'what'. For instance, why is the LH surge critical, or why is the scrotum external?

Avoid common traps by distinguishing between similar-sounding functions or cell types.
