Pineal and Thyroid — Prelims Strategy

Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on the pineal and thyroid glands, adopt a multi-pronged strategy. Firstly, master the basics: clearly identify the location, primary hormone(s), and main function(s) of each gland.

For the pineal gland, focus on melatonin and circadian rhythm. For the thyroid, remember T3, T4, calcitonin, and their roles in metabolism, growth, and calcium regulation. Secondly, understand the synthesis pathways: for thyroid hormones, know the steps involving iodide trapping, oxidation, iodination of thyroglobulin, coupling, and release, emphasizing the role of iodine and thyroid peroxidase.

Thirdly, memorize the regulatory mechanisms: the HPT axis (TRH-TSH-T3/T4 negative feedback) is crucial. Be able to predict how changes at one level affect others. Fourthly, learn the disorders: differentiate clearly between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism based on their causes, symptoms, and hormonal profiles (e.

g., high TSH in primary hypo, low TSH in primary hyper). Pay attention to specific conditions like cretinism, myxedema, Graves' disease, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. For numerical or diagnostic problems, carefully read the symptoms and laboratory values provided, then systematically eliminate options based on your knowledge of the hormonal effects and feedback loops.

Avoid common traps like confusing the functions of different hormones or misinterpreting TSH levels.
