Prelims Strategy

To ace the 'Principles of Inheritance and Variation' questions in NEET, a systematic approach is vital. Firstly, master Mendel's three laws thoroughly, understanding their conditions and implications.

For numerical problems involving crosses, always start by identifying the parental genotypes and the types of gametes they produce. Use Punnett squares for simpler crosses (monohybrid, dihybrid) to visualize combinations, or the product rule of probability for more complex ones, especially for dihybrid crosses, to save time.

Remember the standard ratios: 3:1 phenotypic and 1:2:1 genotypic for monohybrid with complete dominance; 1:2:1 for both phenotypic and genotypic in incomplete dominance/co-dominance; and 9:3:3:1 phenotypic for dihybrid with complete dominance.

Pay special attention to deviations from Mendelism – incomplete dominance, co-dominance, multiple alleles (ABO blood groups are a favorite), pleiotropy, and polygenic inheritance. Understand their unique characteristics and how they alter expected ratios.

For pedigree analysis, practice identifying patterns for autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked dominant, and X-linked recessive traits. Look for key indicators like affected parents having unaffected children (recessive), or affected females having all affected sons (X-linked dominant).

For sex-linked inheritance, remember that males are hemizygous for X-linked genes. Finally, differentiate clearly between Mendelian disorders (single gene) and chromosomal disorders (chromosome number/structure) and memorize key examples for each.

Practice is paramount; solve a wide variety of problems to build confidence and speed.
