Prelims Strategy

To ace NEET questions on carbohydrates, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the classification: clearly differentiate between monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides, knowing key examples for each.

Secondly, memorize key structures and linkages: be able to recall the constituent units and the type of glycosidic bond (e.g., sucrose: glucose + fructose, alpha1,2alpha-1,2; lactose: galactose + glucose, β1,4\beta-1,4).

Pay special attention to the alphaalpha vs. β\beta configuration, as this dictates digestibility and overall polymer structure. Thirdly, understand reducing vs. non-reducing sugars: know the definition and be able to identify which sugars are reducing (all monosaccharides, maltose, lactose) and which are non-reducing (sucrose).

Fourthly, differentiate major polysaccharides: clearly distinguish starch (amylose/amylopectin), glycogen, and cellulose based on their monomers, linkages, branching, and biological roles. Remember their characteristic reactions with iodine.

Finally, practice isomerism: understand D/L isomers, epimers, and anomers, and be able to identify examples. For conceptual questions, read each option carefully, eliminating distractors based on precise definitions and structural knowledge.

For any 'incorrect statement' type questions, systematically verify each option against your core knowledge.
