Prelims Strategy

To excel in NEET questions on Permanent Tissues, a multi-pronged strategy is essential. Firstly, master the definitions and characteristics of each tissue type (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem, phloem).

Pay close attention to cell wall composition (cellulose, pectin, lignin), cell shape, presence/absence of intercellular spaces, and whether the cells are living or dead at maturity. Secondly, focus on functions.

Clearly associate each tissue with its primary role (e.g., storage, flexible support, rigid support, water transport, food transport). Thirdly, understand the components of complex tissues. Memorize the four elements of xylem (tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma, xylem fibres) and phloem (sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem parenchyma, phloem fibres), along with their individual features and roles.

Fourthly, practice diagram-based questions. Be able to identify tissues from diagrams and label their parts. Fifthly, pay attention to exceptions and specific adaptations (e.g., aerenchyma for buoyancy, chlorenchyma for photosynthesis, enucleated sieve tube elements).

Finally, practice comparative analysis. Create your own comparison tables for similar tissues to highlight their distinguishing features. When solving MCQs, carefully read the question and all options.

Eliminate incorrect options systematically, especially trap options that might share some but not all characteristics.
